Forthcoming Books: September 2019

It’s the end of August, so I guess that means it’s time for me to talk about the genre books I’m looking forward to in September. Next month’s quite a busy month for exciting new books, with several already on my pre-order list, plus a few more I’m definitely intrigued by. However, as with last month’s list I’m going to limit this post to the five I’m most looking forward to. So here goes.

Book Review: The Green Man’s Foe

The Green Man’s Foe by Juliet E. McKenna
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

This is the second of Juliet McKenna’s Daniel Mackmain books, following on from last year’s The Green Man’s Heir, and I have to say it’s at least as good as the first one, if not marginally better. If you’ve read the first book then I’m pretty confident you’re going to love this one, and if you haven’t read the first one then you need to remedy that straight away. Seriously, go read it.

Book Review: Kingdom of Souls

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

DISCLAIMER: I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I’m going to say right from the start that this is one hell of an impressive debut from Rena Barron. Kingdom of Souls is, as far as I can tell, her first published work and shows a lot of promise. Book Review: The Green Man’s Heir

The Green Man’s Heir by Juliet E. McKenna
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

For Daniel Mackmain, life has always been a little bit complicated, what with his mum being a dryad, but things start to get really interesting when he inadvertently wanders into a murder scene during a late night ramble. And that’s just the start of his troubles.

Book Review: The Art of Dying

The Art of Dying by Ambrose Parry
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

DISCLAIMER: I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Following on from last year’s The Way of All Flesh, this is the second outing by the writing duo of Dr. Marisa Haetzman and Christopher Brookmyre under the pen-name of Ambrose Parry, and it’s at least as good as their first.

Book Review: The Way of All Flesh

The Way of All Flesh by Ambrose Parry
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

For those who don’t already know, Ambrose Parry is the pseudonym of husband and wife writing team Christopher Brookmyre and Dr. Marisa Haetzman. He’s a veteran crime writer specialising mostly in the tartan-noir genre, while she’s an experienced consultant anaesthetist with a background in the history of medicine, and together they’ve written a pretty damned good historical crime thriller set in mid-nineteenth century Edinburgh.
