My rating : 4.5 of 5 stars

This is only the second of Mike Carey’s books that I’ve read, though I have a few sat on my to-read shelf trying to catch my attention, and I’m thinking I really should move some of them up the list after this one.

It’s an excellent start to the series, and sets the tone very nicely. Plenty of superb world-building, along with some nice character building, makes this a thoroughly readable and enjoyable book, though there are a few times the tone gets a bit darker than some readers might appreciate.

The setting is mostly a typical post-apocalyptic tech-starved environment, and while the wasteland here is green and verdant, the fact the trees might just up and eat you probably makes this a harsher environment than you’d find in things like Mad Max.

The ending does leave a lot of questions, but the story is engaging enough for me to want to continue with book two, and that, I guess, is a good thing for the first book of a trilogy.

Definitely worth a read if you haven’t already.
